New Zealand Acoustic Music"Stepping Stones"
12 Jan 2000

CD Released in 2000, " Stepping Stones".
Recorded in Auckland New Zealand over the winter of 99, in Mal's own studio, and released on New Frontier Records.  All the songs are written by Mal, a few are older songs that have been written since the earlier albums for CBS ( now Sony Music) in Australia, in 1978-1981. Mal's last release was the single "K.I.W.I.", a duet in 1988 with Mark Williams, on EMI., recorded whilst still living in Sydney.
Mal did a lot of the playing, and all of the arranging, engineering and production on this CD, mostly to establish a sound and a bit of a direction musically.
The disc is a mix of sequenced parts playing samples or loops, but with lots of live playing from Mal as well:- acoustic guitars, keyboards, percussion, electric guitars, bass and of course vocals and harmonies.
As well as help from drummer Pat Kuhtze on about 4 tracks, guitarist the late Mike Farrell on one, and bass player Bruce Kerr on another, Mal has his family on a few tracks. Eldest son Lewis  plays alto sax on a couple, and clarinet on "Won't Be Giving Up Easily", and daughter Sarah sings on "Show Feelings Again". Lewis, 27, has performed with The Rodger Fox Big Band, and a number of other jazz line-ups around the country, including his own bands. Sarah, 21, was one of eight finalists in the smokefreerockquest in 1999, on her first try in this contest, out of 600 school bands, with her duo " Doxy", and their own original songs. She has her own CD out called "Goodnight Lonely Girl",and a lot more info on her is at www.sarahmccallum.com
Stepping Stones has all been recorded digitally, and re-mastered with much help from Doug Jane, the engineer largely responsible for the Carl Doy /Martin Winch sounds, amongst many others. This CD is at present only available direct from Mal, so contact him by email- malmccallum@xtra.co.nz
